Hartford Life Insurance Company
On May 10, 1810, the Connecticut General Assembly passes an act to incorporate the Hartford Fire Insurance Company. Nathaniel Terry is selected as the company’s first president.
1861 – Shortly after being inaugurated the 16th President of the U.S., Abraham Lincoln purchases a fire insurance policy from The Hartford to protect his home and nearby property in Springfield, IL.
1913 – The Hartford Accident and indemnity Company is formed to provide a wide variety of insurance coverage, including accident, automobile liability, personal damage, business interruption, and more.
1945 – The Hartford provides comprehensive liability insurance for the first meeting of the United Nations.
1959 – The Hartford expands into the life insurance business by acquiring The Columbian National Life Insurance Company in Boston, MA.
1970 – The Hartford is acquired by ITT Corporation for $1.4 billion – the largest corporation takeover in American history to date. The combined company is renamed ITT-Hartford Group, Inc.
1981 – Hartford Life becomes the first major insurer to introduce universal life insurance coverage.
1985 – The Hartford introduces its first single premium variable life product.
1993 – The Hartford introduces its first variable universal life product. Hartford Life becomes the leading seller of individual annuities in the United States.
1995 – Twenty-five years after acquiring The Hartford, ITT Corporation decides to streamline its operations and release some of its subsidiaries.
On December 20, 1995, The Hartford becomes an independent entity once again, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “HG”.
1997 – The Hartford changes its name from “ITT Hartford Group, Inc.” to “The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc.” Hartford Life issues an IPO using the ticker symbol “HLI”.
2000 – The Hartford (“HIG”) reacquires all shares of Hartford Life (“HLI”). The Hartford Mutual Funds becomes the nation’s fastest growing retail-oriented mutual fund family to reach $10 billion in assets.
The Hartford partners with Nikko Securities to sell variable annuities in Japan.
2010 – On May 10, The Hartford celebrated its 200th Anniversary.
